This story actually took place a few days after Jesus had touched a man who had leprosy and healed him.
Jesus was going from town to town performing miracles and everyone wanted to see Him.
So, as Jesus entered one of the homes in the town, He was teaching the people. There were many people gathering around Him. So many people came, that there was no room left, not even outside the door.
I can imagine that people were pushing each other a little bit to squeeze everyone in, plus there were people gathered outside to see and to hear Jesus and this is where things got very interesting.
There were four men who had a friend who was paralyzed and they decided to take him to Jesus. They carried their friend all the way to town on a mat to see if Jesus would heal him. As soon as they got to the house where Jesus was, they realized that they wouldn't be able to get through to see him. There were too many people around, and it made it difficult for them to push through the crowd.
Suddenly one of the four men had an idea! And they all agreed and said: “Okay! Let’s try it! ”They climbed up the steps on the outside of the house, removing some of the tiles from the roof, placing the paralyzed man with a mat and lowered him down through the roof into the house where Jesus was.
I'm sure Jesus was surprised and was smiling and was moved by their faith, as the man was being lowered down. These men were so sure that Jesus would be able to heal him, otherwise they wouldn't have gone to so much trouble. Jesus, saw that these men believed with all their heart that he could heal their friend. Jesus said to this man, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
Well, some of the teachers of the law heard Jesus forgive this man and they began thinking, "How dare this man forgive sins, only God can do that." Jesus knew exactly what the teachers were thinking and said to them, "Why are you thinking these things?" Which startled the teachers, because Jesus knew what they were thinking!
Jesus also asked them, "Which was easier: to say to this man, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'? I want you to understand that God has given the Son of Man the power to do both these things. Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home." The man got up and was so excited that Jesus had healed him! He glorified and praised God and said, "I am healed”
The crowd were very excited and amazed at what had happened and they all started praising God saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"
