In David’s quiet time , he played instruments, and wrote songs and poems. David was an Israelite and Israelites did not get on with the Philistines.
The problem with the Philistines was that they had many giants living in the land. The biggest and the strongest giant was named Goliath. He was over nine feet tall.
Goliath was covered with armor to protect himself and he carried a big spear. For forty days every morning and every evening Goliath shouted out in a laud voice to scare the Israelites. Three of David's oldest brothers were old enough to fight .
Now David's father Jesse, heard about the giant and was worried for his sons. He called David out of the fields and asked him to take some food to his brothers and report back how they are doing.
So David went to visit his brothers. As he approached the camp he heard Goliath shouting like he did every morning. "Isn't someone going to stand up to this man?" David asked the men in the camp is there no man brave enough to fight this man. "Then I will fight this giant Philistine."
One of the men overheard David and went straight to Saul and told him what David had said. Saul went to David and said, "You can't fight Goliath, you're only a boy and he has been fighting for many years." But David said "I have had to fight against lions and bears to protect my father's sheep. God protected me then and He will protect me now
Saul had no faith in God but David had. That's why God loved David's heart and wanted him to be king.
Saul wanted David to wear heavy armor but David decided not too .David knew that God would protect him. David picked up five smooth stones from a stream nearby and put them in a pouch around his waist, and with his sling he went to Goliath.
As David walked towards Goliath, Goliath looked at David and got cross and thought it was a joke. Goliath said ,why do you send me a child to fight me and all the men on the Philistines side laughed. David said to him without fear, "You fight with a sword and I come with God on my side and today everyone will know that there is one true God in this land."
David reached into his pouch and pulled out a stone, put it into his slingshot and shot it at Goliath. The stone hit him right between his eyes and suddenly Goliath stumbled and hit the ground.
David conquered the giant Philistine! When the Philistines saw this they ran away in fear and David became a hero to all the people in Israel.
