John the Baptist Sunday School Lesson

The bible says as Christians we are crucified with Christ. We don’t really die on the cross like Jesus did, but when we are born again our old “man”, meaning our old human self that loved to sin, died.

We are told that Jesus forgave our sins, and the Holy Spirit moved inside of us and we became a “new creature”. We receive a new heart and we feel fresh and clean again.

It is now possible to hear God’s voice speaking to us. The old nature dies and we become new.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the “Holy Spirit”.

When Jesus visited Nazareth, John was very busy baptising people and he said to the people, “I am here to tell you that someone much greater than I will come soon and I am not worthy to carry his shoes.” At this very moment, Jesus arrived at the river Jordan to be baptised by John. Jesus and John have never met each other before this time, but John knew at once that this was God’s beloved Son.

John said to Jesus, “You should be baptising me, Lord. “But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires.” So John agreed.
Then, as Jesus came out of the water, the heavens was opened to Him, and He saw the spirit of God coming down upon Him like a dove.  Then a voice said from heaven above, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

We receive a new heart and we feel fresh and clean again. The bible says. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His loving kindness toward those who fear Him. He cast our sins away as far as the east is from the west, never to be remembered against us anymore.

Being baptised, and taken under the water, it is a symbol of our past lives being buried. At that very second we have just declared to the whole world that we belong to Jesus Christ, with the water baptism it is the way we let the world know we are the adopted children of God, we have made a choice to follow Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.

It’s a big commitment. We are saying out aloud, “Jesus, here I am, I’m in with you all the way. No matter what it cost me, I’m following you for the rest of my life completely.”

Holy Spirit, guide me, lead me and direct me all the days of my life, with you on my side, I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me.
